A most unusual case
The case of a missing high school student found dead eight days later remains a mystery. The police have made little progress after first pointing to a friend of her father as a key suspect. His body was also found a day after the girl was reported missing near his home. Police said it was apparent suicide after he found the authorities hot on his trail.
Revelations since then have only complicated the case. The girl’s corpse was seriously contaminated, making it impossible for forensics specialists to determine the cause of death. The body was found at the summit of a steep hill, and the victim weighed more than the suspect, which lowers the likelihood that he moved the corpse after he killed her.
Strangely, her hair was cut off. Before she went missing, she texted her friends that she was going to nearby Haenam County in South Jeolla for a part-time job that her friend’s father arranged. In the text, she said, “Report [to authorities] if anything happens to me,” ending with Korean expressions equivalent to “hehe” or a smiley face.
The case harkens back to two murders that happened nearby in 2000 and 2001. In both cases, elementary school students went missing on their way home. They all lived not too far from the suspect. Police are looking for connections between the three cases. Some believe the suspect might have killed the girl for her organs. Other grotesque theories include rape.
Authorities can only say that they are waiting for results from the National Forensic Service. Their excuse is pitiful even with the prime suspect dead. The government is about give greater authority to the police, but questions remain about whether they can live up to their role. The leadership should consider expanding the investigation currently led by local police.

전남 강진군에서 일어난 여고생 사망 사건이 미궁에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 지난 24일 야산에서 A양 시신이 발견됐으나 아직 사망 원인조차 확인되지 않았다. A양이 생존 시 마지막으로 만난 사람으로 추정되는 ‘아빠 친구’ 김모씨가 유력한 살해 용의자로 지목됐지만, 그가 A양 실종 다음 날인 지난 17일 집 근처 공사장에서 숨진 채 발견되는 바람에 수사가 답보 상태다. 경찰은 김씨가 스스로 목숨을 끊은 것으로 판단했다.
그런 가운데 의문을 증폭시키는 다양한 사실들이 드러났다. 실종 뒤 8일 만에 발견된 시신은 육안으로 신원을 확인할 수 없을 정도로 심하게 부패한 상태였다. 시신 발견 장소가 가파른 산의 정상 부근인데, 평소 A양 몸무게는 김씨보다 더 나갔다. 김씨가 살해한 뒤 시신을 옮겼을 가능성은 크지 않다는 얘기다. A양 모발이 길이 1㎝ 정도로 깎여 있었던 것도 특이한 점이다. A양은 실종 직전에 친구들에게 아르바이트 때문에 아빠 친구를 만난다고 알리며 ‘나한테 무슨 일 생기면 신고해줘 ㅋㅋㅋ’라는 문자 메시지를 남겼다. 미스터리적 요소들이 많은 사건이다.
수사에 진척이 없자 다양한 추론들도 등장했다. 2000년과 2001년에 김씨 집에서 10여 ㎞ 떨어진 곳에서 발생한 초등학생 실종 사건과 이 사건의 연관성을 의심하는 보도가 나왔다. 경찰은 미제 실종사건을 다시 들춰보고 있다. 일각에선 김씨가 장기(臟器) 밀매를 하려고 A양을 살해했다는 가설을 내놓기도 한다. 단서나 증거는 없는 의심이다. 성범죄와 연관시킨 괴담 수준의 각종 추리들이 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 타고 번지고 있다.
경찰은 “과학수사연구원의 정밀감정 결과가 나오기를 기다리고 있다”는 말을 반복할 뿐 이렇다 할 설명을 하지 못하고 있다. 유력한 용의자가 숨진 상태라는 점을 참작해도 납득하기 어려운 상황이다. 정부는 수사권 조정을 통해 경찰에 더 큰 권한을 주려 하는데, 이 사건에 나타난 경찰의 수사력은 실망스럽기 그지없다. 경찰 수뇌부는 지역 경찰에만 맡겨도 될 일인지를 고민하기 바란다.
